North Carolina Inmate charged in prisoner death

HILLSBOROUGH, NC (AP) -- A North Carolina inmate has been charged with killing another prisoner.

An autopsy report released Monday says 51-year-old Jimmy Griffin suffered trauma to his head during an assault, resulting in fatal bleeding and swelling in his brain.

Griffin died Oct. 16, three days after officials at the state Department of Public Safety said he collapsed while participating in outside recreation at the Orange Correctional Center near Hillsborough.

A spokeswoman for the State Bureau of Investigation said Monday that inmate Jason Todd Richardson was charged last month with voluntary manslaughter in Griffin's death.

Prison records show the 30-year-old Richardson is serving a 19-month sentence for larceny.

Griffin was serving a life sentence for a 1981 second-degree murder conviction from Columbus County.
